1 of 189 X-Code Mustang Fastbacks built for 1968 Is Going To Auction

1968 Ford Mustang Fastback sale at the Mecum Auctions To be sold at the Kissimmee 2023 auction, Kissimmee, FL, January 4-15, 2023 With their restyled bodies for 1967-68 and ability to nearly accommodate the entire wide range of available Ford Motor Company powertrain combinations, the updated Mustangs offered more of everything buyers demanded. In fact, with its lengthy option list, it was possible for buyers to order a totally unique Mustang suited to one’s individual requirements and tastes. The sporting GT option continued to be popular on any V-8-powered Mustang for 1968 (except the early 289), with rally-style 4-inch fog lamps, low-restriction dual exhaust systems, heavy-duty suspension components and wide-oval tires on GT steel wheels, plus a quick-flip GT gas cap and optional front disc brakes. Choice product placements included Steve McQueen’s iconic 1968 detective film “Bullitt,” ensuring the 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback’s everlasting place in automotive and movie lore.

The 390 CI FE-series big-block engine was the largest for the earlier part of 1968 Mustang production. Of them, the X-Code 390 CI V-8 unit with 2-barrel carburetion was particularly rare, with just 189 Mustang Fastbacks so equipped for 1968, including this factory Ivy Gold car. Sold new at Lynch-Davidson Motors Inc. in Jacksonville, Florida, it comes with a Marti Report listing factory-original features, options and data. Sporting a restoration including a color change to Presidential Blue White lower sill striping, this big-block Mustang’s 390 CI V-8 engine is upgraded with a 4-barrel carburetor. Power is delivered by a C6 automatic transmission and 2.75 conventional rear axle. Power steering and power brakes with optional front discs provide an enjoyable driving experience. The black Deluxe bucket-seat interior features center and overhead consoles, a tachometer and trip odometer, an AM/FM radio, factory air conditioning and tinted glass. Dual chrome mirrors and ventilated steel wheels mounting GT wheel covers and BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires provide the finishing touches.
